About Golden State Heat coaching staff

Kelvin Gibbs was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, where he developed his passion for basketball. He played at Bellflower High School before continuing his playing career at Pepperdine University.

After college, he spent nine seasons playing professional basketball throughout Europe, with stops in Belgium, France, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Greece, and Germany. Competing at the highest levels of the game provided him with invaluable experience, discipline, and a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed both on and off the court.

As a firm believer that sports build character and teach lifelong lessons, Gibbs transitioned into coaching to give back to the next generation. Since 2010, he has coached youth and high school athletes in football, track and field, and basketball. While he enjoys coaching multiple sports, basketball has always been his greatest passion.

His mission is to share the knowledge, experience, and values he has gained throughout his playing and coaching career while helping young athletes reach their full potential. Beyond developing skilled basketball players, he is committed to building confident, disciplined, accountable, and respectful young men and women who are prepared to succeed in sports, school, and life.

 Luke Renfroe is a sports enthusiast whose journey into the world of athletics began with a love for baseball and later a passion for basketball at the age of 13. Although life led me down a different path, I never lost my enthusiasm for the game, participating in everything from church leagues to midnight matchups. In 2012, fate brought me to Bishop O'Dowd High School as a security guard. Little did I know that this unexpected role would ignite a deep desire to contribute to the sport in a coaching capacity. Inspired by the coaching brilliance of individuals like Lou Richie, I decided to make my move after years of soaking up knowledge. Starting with the freshman team, my coaching journey took off, culminating in an undefeated 24-0 record in my debut season. Eager for more challenges, I seized the opportunity to lead the JV team, where I currently find myself. My coaching style is a fusion of O'Dowd's rich traditions and my personal touch, emphasizing the all-around development of players both on and off the court. Beyond the school arena, I co-founded the AAU Golden State Heat with like-minded individuals who share our vision of helping young athletes reach new heights. Coaching, for me, is more than just plays and strategies; it's about mentoring and shaping character. I firmly believe in the potential of each player, and my mission extends beyond the basketball court to inspire success in every aspect of their lives. 

Coach Lawrence (aka Coach "L") was born and raised in Oakland, CA. Lawrence had two sports interest growing up, football and basketball. He fell in love with sport of basketball and as an adult has an opportunity to give back to the youth. Lawrence has been coaching at Bishop O’Dowd High School since 2014, He has been fortunate to be a part of 8 leagues titles, 2 NCS championships, 2 NorCal Championship games and 1 State championship game, culminating in a 2015 State Championship. victory over Mater Dei. He is very passionate about giving back to the community and help mentor young men. 

The greatest joy and success in coaching at Bishop O’Dowd High School, comes from seeing these young men achieve their athletic and academic goals, then go on to be doctors, lawyers, engineers & entrepreneurs.  Knowing that I played a part in the personal growth for these young men is the ultimate reward.  

Dashawn Freeman is a passionate basketball coach and mentor with a commitment to developing young athletes. During his playing days, DaShawn was apart of a St. Mary’s (Berkeley) team that won a CIF Division IV State Championship in 2001. As a standout player at Sacramento State University during the Division 1 era, he set school records in assists and steals while becoming the Big Sky All-Time Steals Leader. In addition, DaShawn earned recognition as a 2-Time All-Conference Big Sky member. He was also inducted into the Sacramento State Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. His professional career includes pre-draft workouts with the Sacramento Kings and playing in the CBA. DaShawn has coached players from all levels of the game from beginners to the NBA since 2008.
